Officer Charles A. Ware was a bicycle patrol officer who responded to a disturbance at the O'Keys Saloon near Georgia and East Streets on April 28, 1897. A gang calling themselves the Bungaloos was engaged in a fight when Officer Ware arrived on the scene. During Officer Ware's arrest of one of the gang, John Ferriter, Ferriter pulled a gun and shot the officer in the head, killing him instantly. The gunman was arrested by Officer Thomas E. Rochford a short distance from the scene of the crime. Ferriter was sentenced to life in prison. He was released on parole in 1917.
