Inspector Albert A. Kelly, the highest ranking IPD officer to die in the line of duty, was killed on December 6, 1956, when he went to the York Hotel at 200 N. Illinois with Sergeant Edward Clark and Officer William G. Beaumont to arrest James B. Baker for the shooting of a store clerk in a robbery a short time earlier. When the officers entered the room, Baker shot Inspector Kelly and Officer Beaumont. Although badly wounded, Officer Beaumont was able to shoot and kill Baker.
