Witness Information

How do I know when to appear in court?

You will receive a subpoena telling you the date, time and the court in which you must appear.  Your testimony may determine whether a case is won or lost; therefore, your presence and cooperation is very important.  You may have to ask for time off from work in order to testify.  Your employer is required by law to allow you time off for court.

What do I do on the day of the trial?

Take your subpoena with you.  Do not bring pocket knives, mace, sharp objects or weapons as you will be required to pass through a security check with metal detectors.  Items taken by the Sheriff's Department will not be returned.

Go to the City-County Building, 200 E. Washington St (downtown across from the City Market).  If you drive, allow time to park in one of the parking lots on Alabama or Washington St.  If using IndyGo, exit at Delaware and Washington Streets near the City-County Building.

Inside the City-County Building, go to the courtroom area indicated on your subpoena.  The City-County Building has three wings.  The major felony criminal courts are located in the west wing, near Delaware St.  Courts one, two, three and four are located on the second floor.  Courts five and six are located on the third floor.

If you are to attend a different court or need assistance, go to the information desk in the lobby of the center tower.

What is my role in court?

Tell the truth.

Speak clearly and answer only the questions asked.

If you don't know the answer to a question, say so.

If you don't understand a question, ask that it be explained.

Stop immediately if the judge interrupts you or if the prosecutor or defense attorney objects.

Dress neatly and be polite.

Remain calm, and always answer carefully and honestly.
