MAP of District 24

Councillor John D. Wesseler is serving his first term on the Council, having been elected by precinct committee members in December 2016 to fill the District 24 Council seat left vacated by newly elected State Senator Jack Sandlin.  Wesseler is committed to focusing on issues that affect public health and safety and economic development.  He currently serves as a member of the Administration and Finance, Ethics and Public Safety and Criminal Justice Committees.

With a history in public service, Wesseler is a perfect fit for the City-County Council.  He retired in 1995 after serving in the Marion County Sheriff’s Department for 25 years, where he worked as a section commander of medical services; after which he served with the United States Marshals part-time until 2012.  He has served as an instructor for the Indiana Law Enforcement Training Board and the American Medical Association, speaking on subjects such as jail medical procedures, medical records, and medical considerations with law enforcement procedures and requirements.  Prior to his appointment to the Council, he served as a ward chairman and precinct committeeman in Perry Township, as well as serving as a member of the Citizens Police Complaint Board.
Wesseler has extensive education in criminal justice-related areas, such as courses with the US Justice Department’s Bureau of Narcotics and Bureau of Prison Management; the Indiana Sheriff’s Association jail operations and civil liberties, and university courses on corrections and mental illness with chemical dependency.  He is an experienced public speaker, presenting programs to community groups such as health organizations and church groups.
A graduate of George Washington High School, Wesseler is married with one daughter.
