In his first year as City County Councilman representing District 7, Joe is a member of the Administration and Finance Committee, the Parks and Recreation Committee, the Public Safety and Criminal Justice Committee, the Ethics Committee, and is Chair and member of the Law Enforcement Study Commission of the Council.
Prior to the Council, Joe completed 12 years on the Washington Township Board, six of which as its President. Joe’s community service includes serving as Chairman of the Board of the American Red Cross of Greater Indianapolis; Chairman of the Board of Community Centers of Indianapolis; Treasurer of the Indianapolis Chapter of the NAACP; Treasurer of the Fall Creek YMCA; President of the Cardinal Ritter High School Board; President of the Capital City SDA School Board; member of the IPD North District Task Force, the IPD Citizens Police Academy, and the 2001 World Police and Fire Games Committee; and Co-chair of the Marion County Prosecutor’s Committee for Fairness in the Justice System, as well as serving on numerous other advisory boards and foundations.
Joe has been a recipient of the United Way You Care Award, an Outstanding Volunteer Award, the CCI Blumenthal Award, the Turn Off the Violence Peacemaker Award, the Governor’s Distinguished Hoosier Award, and the Red Cross Charles Lynn Award for Volunteer of the Year, among other recognitions and awards for outstanding community service.
Joe’s commitment to volunteerism was featured in the IBJ article “Balancing Act” in 2001, as he values his volunteerism to be as integral to his life as his career. For the past 36 years he has been the Director of Administration for Indiana Legal Services, Inc. and is a Viet Nam War veteran.
Joe is also a member of the Capital City Seventh Day Adventist Church, along with his four daughters and grandchildren.
