Inspections

The City of Indianapolis Department of Public Works (DPW) uses finite resources to repair and maintain sidewalks.  If you feel your sidewalk is in such poor condition that it is hazardous, please call the Mayor's Action Center (MAC) at 327-4622.  Report the problem and a DPW township coordinator will inspect the sidewalk within two business days.  The coordinator will evaluate the condition of the sidewalk and determine what, if anything, the city can do.

Sidewalks in need of minor repairs will be sent to the DPW Division of Operations for completion.  The construction schedule lasts roughly six months each year.  As the repair list is ongoing and lengthy, please understand that repair work will not be completed immediately.  Repair work is necessary when a few panels have holes or perhaps one panel is upheaved, creating a tripping hazard.  Repair work is not necessary if the sidewalk has a few cracks or looks discolored or old.  As is to be expected, concrete settles, colors, and moves with age.

Sidewalk Repair Candidate Sidewalk Resurfacing Candidate

If the township coordinator determines that a particular sidewalk is a good candidate for replacement, the coordinator will send the evaluation to the DPW Division of Engineering for review.  The Division of Engineering creates a project list each year.  The list outlines the specific sidewalks scheduled for replacement.  The list is always evolving and is subject to change.  Sidewalks with long stretches of holes, missing panels, and upheaved pavement, are possible candidates for replacement.  Areas in poor condition and with heavy foot traffic will likely be addressed before less-populated areas.
