ReArtFormation II is Recycle Indianapolis' second recycled art program. This year's program is a call for designs of pedestrian recycling bins for the Broad Ripple Area.
Eligibility Amateur and professional artists, 18 years of age or older, who live in Marion County, are invited to submit designs for pedestrian recycling bins that will be made from materials that would otherwise be disposed of in the trash.
Submission Designs must be submitted electronically either via email, or on CD and must be accompanied by a completed entry form and an artist biography of no more than 300 words. Designs must show the completed bin on all sides. The entry form must contain the types of recycled/reused materials that will be used for the bin. Deadline for receipt of submissions is July 31, 2008. Submissions must be emailed to llaflin@indygov.org, or mailed to Lisa Laflin, Dept. of Public Works, City of Indianapolis, 200 East Washington, Suite 2460, Indianapolis, Indiana, 46204. You may also fax your submissions: To the attention of Lisa Laflin 327-4954.
Selection Process A panel of representatives from The City of Indianapolis, the Broad Ripple Village Association, Keep Indianapolis Beautiful, The Indianapolis Art Center, IDEM, Green Broad Ripple, and the Indianapolis-Marion County City/County Council will select 15 designs for creation.
Art Creation Each chosen designer will receive a stipend of $1000, and a voucher for the purchase of materials from Circle City Metal Recycling, to be used for the purchase of materials to create the recycling bin. This includes the purchase of a standard plastic Rubbermaid liner 33" tall with a diameter of 26.5 inches. A list of sources for materials will be provided to the chosen designers. Artists are asked to design their bins with the "flavor of Broad Ripple" in mind. A list of site locations for inspiration is available by emailing llaflin@indygov.org. Bins will need to include an area for signage (provided by the city) with the following dimensions: 6" h x 12" w.
Promotion Designers submitting work must agree to allow the Department of Public Works and its sponsors to photograph and/or reproduce artwork for promotional and educational purposes.
Placement and Maintenance of Recycling Bins These bins will be placed in strategic locations in Broad Ripple where pedestrian traffic is high. Artists will be responsible for maintenance for 1 year, and must sign a maintenance agreement.
Why are we doing this? Every year hundreds of thousands of beverage containers end up in our landfills and waste to energy facilities. The materials that beverage containers are made of are created using huge amounts of petroleum and other natural resources. By recycling our bottles and cans, we provide raw materials to substitute for the virgin materials that are so costly both in terms of dollars and the environment. For example, the energy saved by recycling a single aluminum can is equivalent to a half a gallon of gasoline. By providing the opportunity for pedestrians to recycle these materials we also offer them the opportunity to do something good for the planet. By creating these works of art you also help to educate citizens about the importance of recycling. ReArtFormation II was modeled after The Art of Recycling, a program founded by a group of concerned citizens in Barrington Massachusetts.
