Surrender An Animal

NEW for 2018: IACS has launched a new program to help keep animals in their homes and out of the shelter. The program, called Indy CARES was started by a group of dedicated IACS staff and is funded by the Friends of Indianapolis Animal Care Services Foundation, Inc. It is the goal of Indy CARES to connect pet owners in need with resources to allow them to keep their animals in their homes and care for them responsibly. For more information visit Indy CARES.

Indianapolis Animal Care accepts stray and owner-surrendered animals from members of the community.  Animals can be dropped off at the shelter during Animal Intake hours only (10am to 5pm, Sunday-Tuesday, Friday & Saturday, and also from 10am to 6pm on Thursday). You must present current identification in order to surrender any animal. This service is free to Marion County residents with valid ID or proof of residence. All out-of-county residents will be charged a $40 fee per animal.

Please drive around the building to the area marked Animal Drop Off where a member of our staff will assist you.  Please ensure your animal is secured by a leash or enclosed in a carrier.

Every animal that is surrendered to the shelter is evaluated for its health and behavior for our adoption kennels.  Though we cannot guarantee that an animal will make it to the adoption floor, every effort is made to find a rescue organization or foster home to help place the animal.

To better assist us when evaluating your animal, we encourage you to bring any medical records you may have.  Additionally, bringing toys, treats, food, blankets or other belongings will make the transition easier for your animal.  We will make every effort to send these belongings with your animal should it be sent with a rescue group or adopted.
