The Office of Corporation Counsel provides the City of Indianapolis, Marion County, and most of their agencies with legal advice and representation in court. The Office of Corporation Counsel protects the quality of life in Indianapolis and Marion County by shutting down nuisance properties and enforcing zoning and other ordinances, keeps the city economically competitive by collecting revenue, and defends the city from lawsuits that could drain the city budget.

The office is managed by the Corporation Counsel, a mayoral appointee who serves as chief attorney for the City of Indianapolis and Marion County. The current Corporation Counsel, Chris W. Cotterill, began serving on January 1, 2008.

In its service to the public, the Office of Corporation Counsel is divided into three sections:
