Downtown District officers provide uniformed field patrol and investigative services to the downtown Indianapolis area. The district's roll call facility is located at the Historic Union Station, 39 West Jackson Place and is staffed with 87 sworn and 2 civilian employees. The District covers approximately four square miles with a 2000 population estimate of 16,000. Daily commuters, sports, and other special events can swell the number of citizens on the district to 250,000 or more.
Downtown District relies heavily on manpower provided by officers assigned not only to patrol vehicles, but also bicycle and foot patrol officers. Working closely with downtown citizens and businesses, IMPD Downtown District officers work diligently to keep the downtown area a great place to live, work and visit.
